Here are some of the main events that take place in Tuscany every year. Many of the events have long historical traditions going back centuries. Just think of the Palio in Siena, a very important city event which occurs twice every year which has its roots in the 6th century. The long tradition holds for the all the celebrations that occur on the feast day of a city's patron saint, from the largest town to the smalled village. Wherever you go in Tuscany, at any time of the year, you'll likley find an event or celebration taking place.

EVENTS AND FOLKLORE

As for the calendar of events that take place throughout the year, don’t miss the famous historical reenactment of the Palio di Siena (every year on 2 July and 16 August), the Carnival of Viareggio with its well-known papier-mâché floats, the Eroica, a non-competitive cycling event with vintage racing bicycles staged in Chianti on the first Sunday of October, the Explosion of the Cart, a folk tradition reenacted every year on Easter Sunday in Florence. Between October and November, the town of Lucca hosts Lucca Comics & Games, an international comic book and gaming convention; twice a year (in June and September) the Saracen Joust, an equestrian tournament of medieval origin, takes place in in Arezzo, while on every first weekend of the month Piazza Grande and the streets of the historic town host the Antique Fair of Arezzo, the oldest and biggest in Italy.

'The Preview of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano', is one of the most recognized events in the wine sector. An event that offers operators and wine lovers the chance to taste one of the best wines in the world, in an exclusive and magical location like the Fortress of Montepulciano. A unique opportunity to get to know the wineries and meet the producers.

Cantine Aperte is one of those rare tourist events in Tuscany when you will find just as many (if not more) Italian speaking participants as foreign partakers. Started in 1993, this national event held on the last weekend in May is the wine producer’s response to making their life's work, the passion that propels them into pursuing an enological career and its end result, more accessible to those curious enough to venture out and explore.
